Secret Service Guards Mother Duck, Eggs

By MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer

WASHINGTON - The Secret Service, which has the job of guarding the president and other dignitaries, now has a new temporary duty protecting a mother duck and her nine eggs.

The duck, a brown mallard with white markings, has had several names suggested by Treasury Department people, including “Quacks Reform,” “T-Bill,” and “Duck Cheney.” It has built a nest in a mulch pile right at the main entrance to the Treasury Department on Pennsylvania Avenue.

The Secret Service’s uniformed division, which provides protection for the White House and Treasury building, has set up metal guard rails to protect the nest, which has attracted the notice of tourists on their way to see the White House.

The duck has been provided with a water bowl and seems oblivious to all the attention, sitting calmly on its nest on top of the mulch pile that surrounds one of the new trees planted along Pennsylvania Avenue as part of a renovation project.

Treasury Secretary John Snow stopped to pay his respects this week on the way back from a congressional hearing, Treasury spokesman Rob Nichols said Friday.

“He had been briefed on the duck and he stopped to pay a visit,” said Nichols.

The eggs are expected to hatch the last week of April at which time the duck will be relocated nearer water. But until then, the duck will occupy some of Washington’s prime real estate.

“Foreign leaders, members of Congress, everybody who visits Treasury has to pass by the duck,” Nichols said.

Thank you AP for shitting on the faces of journalists everywhere. SHAME on the AP editor who acutally thought this was worth reporting. And SHAME on the reporter who put his byline on this worthless shit.

Well…

thought I update because of all the lovely comments I’ve been getting.

Crap its so early…(to be exact 4)

Spring break:

So, I have to say I truly miss the South. I  miss the reenactment*, Dixie, the wasted cottonfields, people still cheering at the sight of a confederate flag, everything cooked in butter. Everyone is SO damn nice. ‘

Well not so nice. I received a speeding in Virginia. HAving only had an hour of sleep the previous night and an uncomfortable 9 hour flight, I’ve learned it isn’t the best idea to go on a 5 hour drive afterwards in the wee hours of the morning.

I spent some time on both camps. I ate a fascinating random stew with the Confederates and a pretty good roasted steak with the Union. It was odd seeing the camps and everyone in uniform, but the passion was evident and interviewing these men I could see how dedicated they were. More than half of the Confederates were there because of ancestors. They were spewing stories about their “great-great-great grandaddy”.

::whistles dixie::

I actually got a lump in my throat as Confederates lost the battle of bentonville and the Calvalry rode by waving that beautiful red, white and blue…

*scroll down and see my post on spring break if I’m confusing you

sigh,…and I’m missing the appomattox reenacment right now…..I absolutely despise being so poor

Philadelphia was spectacular. I fell in love with antique row, but once again was too poor to buy anything. But god, was the tourist line long and annoying. Screaming annoying children everywhere and a lot of Koreans for some strange reason. But the architecture was beautiful, though I missed the museum.

Amazing shopping though. Found a lot of great boutiques that actually sold real vintage stuff.

Onwards to DC. Spent a week on Go’s couch. The man is an amazing cook! (You will make someone an EXCELLENT wife someday Go Kasai). GO drunk about every night. Everyone seems to be more academically superior than I am, spewing out articles, news, this amendment, that event, etc. And I thought I was caught up on news.

Toured the usual sights. The Senate floor was…..humbling. much smaller than I anticipated, but no less awe striking. It was odd to see how much christian symbolism played into the architecture of the Senate, like the relief of Moses facing the floor of the Senate “because he was the bearer of laws” my tour guide explained to me. Still….disturbing. So much for seperation of religion and state.

Now on to other news:

It’s official. I will be leaving this country June 19 for the beautiful country of France

So if you need to apologize/buy gifts/confess/thank/compliment/yell/berate/have hot sweaty animal sex/insult please do so before the aforementioned date above. I will not be returning for the next 3 years due to France and wherever the Peace Corps sends me. Thank you!

There. I updated.

Now, what you guys REALLY want to see and I’m posting it because I would like more lovely comments…

Pictures!
