The templestay is a program held in many Korean temples. It began as a national campaign to provide accommodation during the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup Games. During the templestay, visitors are assigned a room in a temple. They can participate in practices such as Buddhist ceremony services, the meal ceremony, the mediation and the 108 bows. Templestays are organized by the Cultural Corps of Korean Buddhism, and are held year-round at 108 temples across the country.

템플스테이란 관광객들이 절에 머물며 사찰체험을 할 수 있는 프로그램을 일컫는 것인데요. 템플스테이는 2002 년 한일 월드컵 동안 숙소를 제공하기 위해 전국적으로 홍보되기 시작했습니다. 템플스테이는 전국 108개의 사원에서 연중 행해지고 있고, 보통 1박 2일로 행해지지만, 더 긴 기간 동안의 프로그램들도 있다고 합니다. 사찰에 머무는 동안, 관광객들은 새벽예불, 발우공양, 108배등에 참여할 수 있습니다.

The templestay has evolved over the past few years. Now, in five temples, there are simultaneous interpreters live at the temple during the templestay. According to the Korea Tourism Organization, more than 20,000 foreign tourists participate in the program each year. Providing educational gains as well as calming experience, It is a good way for foreigners to learn about Korean Buddhism.

템플스테이는 지난 몇 년 동안 여러 가지 형태로 발전해왔는데요. 전국의 다섯 곳의 사원에는 템플스테이 기간 동안 동시 통역사들이 머물고 있습니다. 이러한 서비스 때문인지, 템플 스테이는 외국인들에게 점차 인기를 얻었고, 한국 관광 공사에 따르면, 20,000 명 이상의 외국인들이 매년 템플스테이에 참여하고 있습니다.

The templestay has also gained popularity among Koreans, especially as temples have recently come up with creative ideas to attract more visitors. For example, during the summer vacation, some temples provide the Chinese Character School, which is especially popular among students.

Konglish, a word created from combining Korean and English, is the use of English words in a Korean context. These words can be actual English words in Korean context or a combination of Korean and English words. Common sentence structure or vocabulary mistakes made by Koreans are also referred as Konglish. For example, some English words and phrases are often shortened if Koreans feel they are too long. As Koreans migrated to English speaking countries Konglish has also come to refer to Korean words being used in mainly English sentences.

콩글리시란 한국 안의 영어 어휘 중에서 한국어의 기준을 적용하였거나 영어 문장을 표현할 때 한국어의 문법적인 것들이 사용되어 원어민이 알아들을 수 없는 것을 말합니다. 이는 원래 의미와 다르게 영어 표현을 가져다 쓰거나, 표현 중 일부를 생략하거나 일부만 가져다 쓰는 것, 그리고 비영어권에서 만들어진 조어와 같이 원어민에게 익숙하지 않은 영어를 포함하는데요. 최근 들어, 영어권으로 이민가는 한국인이 많아지면서, 영어속에 한국말을 섞어 쓰는 것 또한 콩글리시라고 불리게 되었습니다.

One example of a commonly-used Konglish word is “handphone.” In Korea, the word, “handphone,” refers to cellphone. Also, “sharp” is a word that is routinely used in Korea instead of a mechanical pencil. In addition, Koreans say “air-con” instead of “air conditioner.” One example of Konglish phrase is “Fighting.” This phrase is often used among Koreans and even media such as television commercials. It is used to encourage or to cheer up others.

콩글리시 단어의 대표적인 예로는 핸드폰이 있는데요. 이는 싱가포르식 영어에서 유래된 말로, 올바른 영어표현은 “cell phone” 입니다. 또한 “샤프” 라는 말도 콩글리시인데요. 영어권에서는, 샤프를 “mechanical pencil”이라고 부릅니다. 그리고, 에어컨은 “air conditioner”의 줄임 말로, 이 또한 콩글리시 입니다. 한국인들이 자주 쓰는 표현 중 “파이팅!” 이라는 표현이 있는데요. 이는 영단어지만, 원어민들은 한국어에서의 쓰임새를 이해할 수 없는 표현 중 하나입니다.

One problem that is brought by modern use of Konglish is a linguistic divide between North Korea and South Korea. North Korean refugees can have trouble integrating into South Korean society because most Konglish is not used in North Korea. This can lead to confusion, misunderstandings and delay integration into the society. Despite of problems that Konglish might cause, it has established as a unique sublanguage in South Korea.

콩글리시가 가져오는 문제점 중 하나는 바로 늘어나는 북한과 남한 사이의 언어장벽입니다. 남한에 거주하는 탈북자들은 북한에서는 쓰이지 않는 외래어들 때문에 남한 사회에 적응하는데 어려움을 겪는다고 합니다. 이렇듯 콩글리시 때문에 생겨나는 문제점들에도 불구하고, 콩글리시는 한국의 독특한 언어로 자리잡았습니다.

It is held on the 8th day of the 4th month in the Chinese lunar calendar, which is May 21st this year. This day is an official holiday in Hong Kong, Macau, and South Korea.

다가오는 금요일은 석가탄신일입니다. 부처님 오신날이라고도 불리우는 석가탄신일은 불교에서 석가모니가 탄생한 날로 매년 음력 4월 8일입니다. 음력 8일이기 때문에, 석가탄신일은 초파일이라고도 불리웁니다. 올해는 5월 21일이 석가탄신일인데요. 석가탄신일은 아시아의 대부분의 나라들이 기념하는 날이고, 홍콩, 마카오, 그리고 남한에서는 공휴일입니다.

In Korea, the day is celebrated with lotus lanterns. Many lotus lantern festivals take place throughout the country. One festival takes place at Seoul. The 2010 Seoul lotus lantern festival starts on May 14th and continues until May 23rd. There are many features to this festival, including the display of traditional lanterns of various designs at Bongeun temple. Also, a parade that involves 100,000 lanterns takes place in Jongro district of Seoul.

한국에서 석가탄신일이 되면 빠질수 없는 것이 연등인데요. 석가탄신일쯤이 되면, 전국의 여러도시에서 큰 연등행사들이 열립니다. 서울에서는 2010 서울연등축제가 2010년 5월 14일부터 5월 23일까지 열리는데요. 이 축제의 일부로 삼성동 봉은사에서는 전통등 전시회가 열리고, 종로거리에서는 연등행렬이 열린다고 합니다. 이 연등행렬에서는 10만여개의 등불들과 커다란 장엄등의 행렬을 구경할 수 있고, 사물놀이 등의 즐거운 행사들도 있다고 합니다.

On this day, many people visit temples around the country. Most temples provide free meals and tea to all visitors. Although the breakfast and lunch provided are often bibimbap, the traditional food that is prepared around this day includes rice cakes with red bean paste inside, and dumplings made of fish.

Areas affected by the dust experience decreased visibility and the dust is known to cause a variety of health problems, not limited to sore throat and asthma in otherwise healthy. For those already with asthma or respiratory infections, it can be fatal. Often, people are advised to avoid or minimize outdoor activities, depending on severity of storms. Also, it can cause skin rashes to people who have sensitive skins.

황사가 심해지면, 항공, 운수, 정밀산업 같은 산업에 손실이 일어납니다. 또한, 황사는 천식 등 폐 호흡기 환자들에게는 치명적 일수도 있습니다. 그리고, 민감성 피부를 가진 사람들은 황사로 인해 피부염이 생길 수 있습니다. 따라서, 황사주의보가 내려지면, 사람들은 야외활동을 피하거나 최소화합니다. 황사 먼지에는 유황, 일산화탄소, 중금속과 발암 물질 등이 들어있습니다.

Toxic pollutants such as sulfur, carbon monoxide, heavy metals and other carcinogens often accompany the dust storms. In recent years, South Korea and the People's Republic of China have participated in reforestation efforts in the source region. However, this has not affected the problem in any significant way

발원지인 중국이나 몽골뿐 아니라 황사 피해를 직접적으로 받는 한국·일본 등에서도 황사 피해를 줄이기 위한 각종 대책이 수립되고 있는데, 현재까지 가장 많이 이용되는 방법은 방풍림 조성입니다. 하지만, 아직 근본적인 해결책은 없는 상태라고 합니다.
