K-beauty expo targets foreign tourists
Amid the growing popularity of hallyu, the Korean wave, a local provincial government will host a massive cosmetics and beauty fair from May 3 until May 26. The organizing committee for the Cosmetics and Beauty Expo aims to attract around a million visitors, 70,000 of whom it hopes will be from overseas. The event’s overall theme, “Healthy Bio, Beautiful Life,” is the only exposition of this type acknowledged by the government, international associations and organizations.

Actor Park Si-hoo has been charged with raping an aspiring starlet.

On February 14, Park Shi Hoo, a trainee A and rookie actor K drank together. A alleges that after a night of heavy drinking, she got drunk and blacked out. However, Park said that A and Park spent time together with mutual interest. The owner of the bar, in which Park and his accuser drank, stated that they didn’t seem that drunk. On the other hand, the police saw the surveillance footage of Park ’s home and discovered that A was carried inside by another celebrity, K.

Police will investigate further whether “A” has been drugged or not. Park Si-hoo is a South Korean actor best known for his television series Prosecutor Princess and The Princess' Man.

Taekwondo will remain at the Olympic games.
The International Olympic Committee declared that taekwondo will remain an Olympic sport which was an important victory for sports officials here who had lobbied desperately on behalf of keeping the traditional Korean martial art.
The biggest concern is that people continue to find it boring to watch. To make the competition more fun, taekwondo officials adjusted the scoring system for the London Games. For the Olympics, taekwondo is currently in group D in a table ranking events between A and E in terms of revenue sharing from television income.

Seoul Arts Center Celebrates its 25th Anniversary
The center has planned a series of special performances and exhibitions throughout the year, such as the Korean World Star series featuring cellist Hanna Chang and soprano Sumi Jo. The Seoul Arts Center opened its doors to great fanfare on February 15th, 1988, as Korea's first major arts and culture complex. The facility contained the nation's first concert hall was designed exclusively for classical music and the Seoul Calligraphy Museum. Later, the center would add more spaces for visual and performing arts. The Opera House opened in 1993 and its unique design, modeled after the shape of a traditional Korean hat, has since become a landmark for the center.

Actress Lee Young-ae has been featured in a full-page ad in the New York Times promoting bibimbap, the healthful Korean dish of rice with assorted vegetables. The ad was paid for by enthusiastic promoters of Korean cuisine including Seo Kyoung-duk, a public relations expert and professor at Sungshin Women's University. The ad shows Lee, who played the lead role as a court cook in the hit TV series "Jewel in the Palace," neatly dressed in hanbok or traditional Korean dress.

Psy puts his stamp on Korea Post

Pretty soon, fans of “Gangnam Style” will be able to put a Psy stamp on their postal mail. The Korea post announced that to mark the video reaching 1.3 billion views, a limited edition Psy stamp will go on sale starting Monday. The collector’s set consists of six stamps and three cards all bearing the Korean rapper’s image and comes in a glass frame. The pop-art style of images capture Psy doing his trademark horse dance moves and the cards are all signed by the entertainer.

Artist Ahn Jun's self-portraits are a high art
Ahn Jun's death-defying self-portraits may look Photoshopped, but she insists they're not. Positioning herself precariously at the top of high rise buildings around the world, she uses a self-timer to take as many pictures as possible per second until the memory card is full. In the most dangerous shots, such as when she is using her whole body to lean dangerously over the edge, a harness is sometimes used. Out of the thousands of images, she then selects the "one or two that can subvert the context … images in which my body looks peaceful or aggressive, rather than fearful".

Korean actor Ahn Jae-wook receives surgery in U.S.
South Korea’s TV star Ahn Jae-wook is recovering after an emergency surgery for a stroke in the United States, his management agency said Wednesday. According to Jable Entertainment, Ahn received surgery for a subarachnoid hemorrhage berry aneurysm after experiencing serious headaches the previous day. The agency said.“He is now recovering in an intensive care unit of the hospital and has no problem communicating or moving after a successful operation,” the agency said.The 41-year-old actor and singer is one of the most popular South Korean celebrities in other Asian countries, especially in China, where the MBC TV series “Star in My Heart,” which he starred in, was a big hit.

The Korean movie industry seems to have to have found its next mega-hit. The action blockbuster “The Berlin File,” drew more than 2 million viewers in five days after opening, thanks to the 3 million tickets sold during the weekend alone. “Berlin” is a spy flick directed by martial arts devotee Ryu Seung-wan and features an A-list cast led by Han Seok-gyu, Ha Jung-woo, Jeon Ji-hyun and Ryu Seung-beom, the younger brother of the director. The Korean film sector is coming off a record year when it sold nearly 200 million tickets. Movies have been emerging as a key consumption area during the economic downturn as consumers look for cheaper ways to spend their leisure time.

Korean martial art taekwondo remains and Wrestling is out at Olympic
The traditional Korean marital art taekwondo will remain an Olympic sport for the foreseeable future after surviving the latest scrutiny at the International Olympic Committee (IOC), officials here said Tuesday.At the IOC Executive Board meeting, taekwondo was kept on as one of 25 "core sports" in the Summer Olympic program. From 26 sports competed at the London Games last summer, IOC President Jacques Rogge and the 15-member executive board decided to drop wrestling.

Upcoming film 'Run to the South' explores pleasures of freedom.
The film is about a man who gets fed up with the responsibilities of citizenship and living in a regulated society and flees with his family to a remote island far from the government’s reach. Choi Hae-gab balks at everything he sees as unreasonable, not the least of which is an electric bill bloated by the addition of a TV license fee. The director Im says "Our society is full of uncertainties and ferocious competition. The family in 'Run to the South' is willing to step ahead and achieve what they want by breaking away from social norms and traditions".

Kang Byung-kyu gets jail term for fraud.
A former pitcher for the Doosan Bears in a pro baseball league of Korea, Kang Byung Kyu is charged for fraud as well as defamation and is sentenced to a year and six months in jail for use of violence against Hallyu star, actor Lee Byung Hun. Kang answered, "I am sorry the justice department only listened to what the prosecution had to say. The case has already traveled through three justices during its four years of proceedings. I believe there are parts to the case that even the justice didn′t completely understand. I will fight to the end for the truth."

A week later in Salt Lake City, she set new Korean records for two straight days in the women's 1,000-m race at the ISU World Sprint Championships. Korean culture book was published in Arabic.
Arabic countries are not unfamiliar places for Koreans anymore as the nation’s television dramas such as “Daejanggeum” (Jewel in the Palace) and “Jumong” garnered enormous popularity in some Middle Eastern countries a few years ago.Since then, their interest in Korean culture and history has risen rapidly. But there is little Korean cultural content available in Arabic.To address this shortage, the Center for International Affairs, a division of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS), has recently published “Cultural Landscapes of Korea” in Arabic to reach out to a wider audience. The book was published in English, Russian and Chinese in 2010.

몇 해 전부터 한국드라마 “대장금”과 “주몽”이 중동지역에서 인기를 시작하면서 최근들어 이들 지역에 한류열풍이 불고 있습니다. 따라서 한국학중앙연구원(한중연) 한국문화교류센터는 한국에 대한 외국의 올바른 인식을 높이기 위해 ‘한국에 대한 다양한 이해자료’를 아랍어로 발간하여 중동지역에 보급합니다. 이번에 발간된 자료집은 지난 2010년에 영어, 러시아어, 중국어로 발간됐던 ‘Cultural Landscapes of Korea’ 아랍어판(192쪽)입니다.

Kim Dong-wan donates to ‘Comfort Women’
Kim Dong-wan, who is a member of the legendary Korean pop group ‘Shinhwa’ from the 90s, has donated 30 million won to help the plight of Comfort Women, Korean women forced into sex-slavery by Japan during WWII. His management company announced that Kim donated the money through a TV show that helps out those in needs. “Kim Dong-wan has been a good Samaritan for a long time,” said a spokesperson from the agency. “With his donation, he also expressed his hope that the women will be given an official apology,” said the agency.

3 actors to show off talent in 'Sinsegae'

Football Fan Guilty of Racially Abusing Park Ji-sung

A U.K. court has found a football fan guilty of making a racist comment about Park Ji-sung of Queens Park Rangers. British media on Tuesday said the West London Magistrates' Court found Everton fan William Blything guilty of racially abusing Park and Everton's Victor Anichebe. He reportedly shouted a derogatory term for Chinese people referring to Park. Chink is. Blything was reported to the police by two other fans in the game and was indicted in November last year.
