Executioner

While South Korea has banned capital punishment since 1997, the movie imagines what would happen if the death penalty is resumed.

사실상1997년부터 한국에서 사라진 사형. 하지만 오늘 소개해 드릴 영화에서는 만약 이 사형제도가 다시 부활하게 되면 어떨까? 하는 궁금증 안고 시작합니다.

"Executioner" focuses on Jae-gyeong, who, after failing the state exam, becomes a prison guard. His timid ways with the prisoners soon become a severe disadvantage and the more experienced Jong-ho soon starts to teach him the ways. He is ruthless with the prisoners, never showing an inch of compassion. There is also veteran guard Kim, who plays chess with a death row inmate he has become friends with.

영화 “집행자” 중 재경은 이어지는 고시 낙방 끝에 교도관으로 취직합니다. 어리버리한 행동 때문에 짖궂은 재소자들에게 이리저리 치이던 재경은 10년 차 배터랑 교사 종호로부터 여러가지를 교육받습니다. 종호가 일말의 자애심이나 동정심 없이 재소자들을 대하는 반면 또다른 베터랑 김교위는 사형수와 장기를 두는 등 재소자들과 허물없이 지내는 편입니다.

One day a horrific psychopathic serial murder case breaks out and the justice ministry decides to resume capital punishment. Kim, the only guard with execution experience, disappears, unable to relive the horror of the job. The prison guards are all reluctant to carry out the dirty work.

어느날, 사이코패스에 의한 소름끼치는 연쇄살인 사건이 일어나고 이에 정부는 사형제도를 부활시켜 불안한 민심을 잠재우려합니다. 교도소 내 유일한 사형 집행 경험자로써 명령서를 받아든 김교위는 괴로움을 이기지못해 어디론가 사라져버리고, 교도관들은 온 갖 핑계를 대며 집행조에 뽑히지 않으려고 합니다.

So Jong-ho volunteers while Jae-gyeong and others are chosen. When the day arrives, it is not just the prisoners that are doomed to die ― those who must secure the noose discover that something dies within their hearts.

종호가 자발적으로 나서고 결국 재경과 다른 몇몇 이들이 제비뽑기로 선출됩니다. 어느덧 사형 집행일은 다가오고, 도망칠 수 없는 죽음의 문턱에 선 사형수들과 함께 올가미를 채우고 흰천을 덮어씌우는 교도관들의 마음도 죽어갑니다.

The film stars Jo Jae-hyeon Yoon Kye-sang and Park In-hwan. This is Choi Jin-ho feature directorial debut. 조재현, 윤계상, 박인환씨가 출연한 최진호 감독의 첫 감독 데뷔작입니다.
