On Korean New Year’s Day, it is a tradition to eat a bowl of Tteokguk. Tteokguk literally means soup with rice cakes. This name seems appropriate since Tteokguk is comprised of beef broth within which is placed several thinly sliced rice cakes. It is said that a person gets a year older when he finishes one bowl of Tteokguk. So, some children eat several bowls of Tteokguk, hoping to become an adult sooner.

한국에서는, 매년 설날 아침 떡국 한 그릇을 먹는 풍습이 있습니다. 설날에 떡국을 먹는 이유에 대해서는 여러 가지 가설이 있는데 그 중 한가지는 흰 가래떡처럼 순수하고 장수하라는 의미로 먹은 것이라는 이야기가 있습니다. 그리고, 설날에 떡국을 먹어야 비로소 한 살을 더 먹는다는 이야기도 있는데요. 그래서, 빨리 어른이 되고 싶은 아이들은 떡국을 몇 그릇씩 먹기도 하죠.

There are many hypotheses about why people started eating Tteokguk on New Year’s Day. Froe example, some people suggested that long rice cakes symbolize long life. Also, white color of rice cakes means a new start for a new year. There are various types of Tteokguk. One of them is Jo-rang-e(조랭이) Tteokguk of Gaesung area. It has unique cocoon-shaped rice cakes.

떡국의 종류에는 우리가 흔히 알고 있는 얇고 동그란 모양의 떡이 들어간 떡국 외에도 다양한데요. 개성지방에서는 모양이 매우 독특한 조랭이 떡국을 먹는데요. 이 떡국에 들어가는 떡은 누에고치 모양으로 가운데가 쏙 들어가 있습니다. 특이한 모양 외에도, 조랭이 떡국은 아주 쫄깃쫄깃한 떡의 맛이 일품이라 다른 지방의 사람들에게도 인기가 많다고 합니다.

It is not exactly known when people started eating Tteokguk on the morning of Korean New Year’s Day. But, people think it has been for a long time becuse it is written down in documents of Josun dynasty that it is a custom to eat Tteokguk in Korean New Year’s Day.

설날에 떡국을 먹는 풍습이 언제부터 시작되었는지는 정확하지 않은데요. 조선시대의 문서에 떡국은 설날에 빼놓을 수 없는 음식이라는 기록이 있는 걸로 보아서 설날 아침에 떡국을 먹는 풍습은 꽤 오래된 풍습일 것이라고 추정됩니다.
