Continuing the trend of using a completely different English title, "Almost Love" (which should have been translated from Korean as "youth comics") was released in Korea on March 23rd. Its director Lee Han previously released the crowd pleasing romantic movie "Lover's Concerto": most recently, he produced another heart-warming movie called "Garden of Heaven" which stared the now deceased actress Lee Eun-joo.
This time around, Lee Han charged "Almost Love" with an energy and freshness which weren't readily apparent with his previous works. The difference is noticeable even in the movie's main trailer. Popular actor Gwon Sang-ouh and sassy actress Kim Ha-neul are working together again since they hit it big in "My Tutor Friend" back in 2003. This couple helped "Almost Love" to be sold for 5.4 billion won to a Japanese film importer, which is the second highest amount paid after "April Snow".
In this upbeat romantic comedy, the audience is introduced to 2 characters: Jee-hwan and Dal-lae. Jee-hwan is a decent guy who dreams of becoming Korea's Jackie Chan. He practices Tae Kwon-do and works part time as a stunt double. As for Dal-lae, she is a college student who hopes to become a famous actress. She auditions for plenty of roles but fails every time to overcome her stage frights. These 2 goofballs are best friends of 13 years and their friendship is still going strong. Although they are so close, thoughts of becoming intimate and go beyond just friends are far from their minds. They simply know each other too well: from their weaknesses to the most unattractive moments. But when they start dating other people, they realize something is missing in each other's relationship.
Recently, a new reporter let the 2 leads interview each other. From this interview, actors Kim and Kwon agreed that their screen chemistry was still present off screen and it was apparent in the way they exchanged lines. Kim complimented how Kwon "has a great glare [and even though] he looks like a rascal, he also feels like someone with a strong feeling of love". To this, the handsome Kwon said after a light laugh: "Kim Ha-neul has an unique image: these days, actresses have all gone through plastic surgery, which makes them actually look alike. However, Kim has no one that looks like her."
