Good-bye Mom / Kim Joo Young잘가요 엄마 / 김주영
There is no word like 'Mom'. For many of us, the word stirs up our hearts. Even when she is so close to us, we tend to call 'Mom' as if she were far away. For today’s “Book Story,” we will introduce “Good-bye Mom” written by “Kim Joo Young.”
“엄 마”만큼 우리의 가슴을 뭉클하게 하는 단어가 또 있을까요? 가장 가까운 곳에 있지만 가장 멀리 있는 것 처럼 부르게 되는 그 이름, 엄마. 오늘 “책 넘기는 소리” 시간에는 “김주영”의 자전적 소설 “잘가요 엄마”를 소개해드립니다.
The Author, Kim Joo Young dedicates this book as his first love song for his mom in 41 years. He has engraved his deep confessions for his 'Mom' between the lines of this book.
The story starts at the scene where the main character, 'I' receives news of his mother's death through his stepbrother. 'I' has always resented his mom who caused him to leave his hometown to wander aimlessly. Even through the years, this deep resentment was not pacified and for this reason he tries to avoid his involvement in his Mom's funeral.
이 소설은 작가가 41년 만에 처음 부르는 사모곡이자, 그의 내밀한 고백을 담고 있습니다. 주 인공이 엄마의 죽음을 배다른 아우에게서 전해 듣는 장면으로 소설은 시작됩니다. 주인공인 “나”는 그동안 제 발로 고향을 떠나 떠돌이로 살게 만든 엄마에 대한 원망이 있었습니다. 노년에 접어든 지금까지도“나”는 원망을 떨쳐버리지 못합니다. 그때문에 엄마의 장례에 무책임한 태도로 일관하며 회피하려고 합니다.
Hesitantly, he ends up attending the funeral. After the funeral, he discovers a lipstick-never worn-in his mom's cheap purse. He realizes then, that the unused lipstick that would have had waited for its time deep inside the purse was like how his mother would have waited for him.
"Mom was no different from me, I should not have treated her like that"...but 'I' realized this a little too late. His love song for his mom remains as the saddest melody deep inside him.
장례를 치르고 돌아온 “나”는 엄마가 쓰던 싸구려 비닐가방 속에서 한 번도 쓰지 않은 립스틱을 발견합니다. 줄곧 가방 깊이 들어있었을 립스틱은 내가 모르던 엄마 자신이 있었다는 사실을 깨닫게 해줍니다.“엄마도 결국 ‘나’와 똑같은 사람이었다.” 하지만, “나”는 이 사실을 너무 뒤늦게 깨달아 버립니다. 미련하고 바보 같은 엄마의 이야기는, 김주영의 단련된 손끝에서 더욱 미련하고 촌스럽게, 그래서 더욱 아프게 그려집니다.
The auther Kim Joo Young has never been lazy with putting out his pieces. Over 40 years, he has published many famous titles such as 'Anchovy', 'An Empty House' and the steady-selling book, 'A Commission Agent', which put is name among the most famous Korean writers.
저 자 김주영은 등단 41년 동안『객주』 『멸치』 『빈집』 등을 포함한 작품 활동을 게을리 한 적이 없습니다. 특히 대하소설인 『객주』는 그의 이름을 한국 문학계에 올려놓으며, 꾸준히 사랑받고 있습니다. 일흔 셋의 나이에도 불구하고, 해가 갈수록 그의 펜은 점점 짙어지기만 합니다.
